free stuff

What is it about 'free stuff' that make the 'giver' laugh when you say "no thank you."

Well not 'laugh' exactly - more sneer, with a sorrowfull look that says "how can you be so stupid it's free?". . .

What they don't realise is the overhead the free item imposes on me.
. I have to carry it with me until I can read it
. I have to make a decision about it's use to me and whether in fact I NEED to read it
. I then have to dispose of it

So thank you Mr (Mrs, Miss, Ms) I don't want it. Despite the fact you only get paid a pittance and only if you manage to give them all away

I've spent many years encouraging those in education to share! Just think of how many hours are spent searching, creating, reinventing etc.

Practitioners, managers, administrators and others, in general, don't have time to search for 'free stuff' that would enhance their current practice. I always say "thank you"! Why? There is a limit to how often any body will offer to share and be 'turned down'!

I don't want to return to the 'I found it', 'I created it' so 'I wont share it' mentality.

Perhaps what you have seen as a "sneer" is in fact an outward expression of rejection - again!

Ah - but the difference there John is that sharing resources and giving away free papers is fundementaly different. Like you I like to share - it's what I do and when FERL was around, what I always did.

The system works well when the 'free' stuff is there fore you - when you want it. Like the morning Metro - it's in a stack and I can choose to take one or not. When an operative is handing it out and 'sneers' when I don't want one at that time - it's irritating. It's like they are annoyed that I do in fact have that choice.

Walking through london is now so muhc of a 'free paper' nightmare that i take one from the first guy/gal and dump it just before i get on the train (it protects me from being pestered).

I think that I'm most annoyed at the rudeness dispalyed by breaking into someone's conversation (which is what ticked me off in Leeds on Thursday)

So - i mainly agree - but not about free papers. So there ...
